It doesn’t just happen to girls
Below is an update I received from Jane Tafel, the Executive Director of Hagar USA. Please read it to find out about their pilot program to help boys in Cambodia who are victims of sexual abuse. It’s one more way you can help take a small step toward big change!
Sexual abuse is a devastating experience for anyone. Successful healing is most likely when care is provided promptly, holistically, and compassionately. Unfortunately, such care has not been available to boy victims in Cambodia. The lack of any specialized services has meant that boys are often vulnerable to repeat victimization.
Last year Hagar (along with World Vision) commissioned research to better understand the issue. A report entitled “I Never Knew it Could Happen to Boys” was published in January. It provides insight on prevalence of abuse, cultural factors contributing to lack of services, and recommendations for programming. In response, Hagar has now launched a small pilot project to serve boys. Our goal is to develop the same quality program as provided to girls.
According to Talmage Payne, Hagar International CEO, “Boys matter and our silence stops from now on.”
As with all of the “Hagars” and “Ishmaels” we serve, we will provide whatever it takes for as long as it takes, to restore life in all its fullness. As always, our work is dependent on charitable gifts from individuals who share our heart for the abused, exploited and rejected. We are grateful to Equitas Group of Knoxville, Tennessee for supporting this new initiative. You can donate now and help, too.
