Valentine’s Day is 1 week away and we have some great ideas for how you can declare your love!  The most obvious is to buy a gift from Stop Traffick Fashion, of course.  Our gifts will show the one you love how much you care and will also enable you to share a story of hope and spread love to survivors of trafficking around the world.  Check out our great selection of jewelry or bath and body products!

If you prefer to go the traditional route with chocolates, be sure to buy fair trade! There is a great selection of fair trade chocolate on Equal Exchange and TransFair USA also has some tips on where to find some goodies.

Finally, if you’re looking for a unique and strikingly personal way to reach out to survivors of human trafficking, we highly recommend the Love146 program to send a Valentine to survivors of child trafficking in the Philippines!  It only takes a few minutes so check it out!

Product Information, STF News, Uncategorized — Emily on February 3, 2010 at 12:56 am

If you haven’t been to Stop Traffick Fashion lately you should stop by and check it out!  We’ve made a lot of changes in the past couple of weeks.  First, we’ve re-designed our home page.   We love the new product shots and there’s also a new link to all of our press.  Our blog also now has a widget displaying all of our latest tweets.  If you’re already on Twitter be sure to follow us to get the latest news about human trafficking.  If you aren’t into Twitter you can check out some of our latest tweets on our blog to see what all the fuss is about.  We post lots of great news stories from various NGOs and other anti-trafficking activists.

Finally, we’ve added a ton of new items!  Our collections page has been updated with several new collections including our all natural bath and body products, bags from Nomi Network and brand new jewelry from Wonderfully Made.  It’s almost impossible to pick our favorites but we’ll try!

The Andrea Tote has already been very popular and our extra long multi-colored magazine necklace is finally online.  We’ve added a lot of new jewelry from Nightlight including the Vivacious Necklace and Bracelet, plus a new hobo bag in our London series.  We definitely want to mention the brand new collection of jewelry from Wonderfully Made.

Wonderfully Made’s model of social entrepreneurship hopes to provide an alternative income for girls and boys leaving trafficking situations. Sustainable jobs are created through producing high quality products desired by Western markets. The jewelry is made in Chiang Mai, Thailand and helps to provide hope and new life for survivors of human trafficking.  We especially love the Emily Necklace, Jasmine Necklace and Venezia Earrings.

News from Freeset

Partner Organization News, Product Information, Survivor Stories — Emily on January 13, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Please read the below newsletter from Freeset in Kolkata, India.  You can support these women by buying one of our Freeset totes and coming soon, the Freeset tees.

Everybody tells me I’m hard to buy presents for. I guess it’s hard to get excited about stuff, especially when most of us have too much already. I have to say though, if a present can be likened to being able to see freedom at work in the lives of women, there is no Christmas present quite like it. A couple of weeks ago one woman gave me the best Christmas present ever. Let me explain.

While Gina was trapped in prostitution she had no room to call her own. She used to stay under another woman’s bed in a brothel. I guess there were times when she had to wait while her friend finished with a customer before she could emerge from underneath the bed. I presume when she had her own customers she was permitted to use the bed for a fee.

Fortunately, not long after joining Freeset, she was able to move into a new room with her six year old son, a place they could call their own. Well, you could call it a room but it’s more like a closet, a room created from the empty space underneath a skinny staircase. The highest point is four feet and the lowest – well – you get the picture. Still, Gina has been able to leave the sex trade and that’s worth celebrating.

There are times though when Gina, at her new job at Freeset, falls off asleep. You see, being H.I.V. positive means she is not always feeling Hi Everyone, on “top of the world.” Thankfully, the antiretroviral medication helps bring some stability to her health.

Good rooms are hard to come by in our community so I’m always on the lookout on behalf of Gina and other women. I mean, wouldn’t it be great for Gina to have a better room. Just two weeks ago Gina heard about a room coming available in the very building she was living in. With a little bit of help with the deposit she would have a much better living space for both her and her son. I could see just how much she wanted that room.

When the landlady approached me to see if Freeset wanted to take on that room I was faced with a huge dilemma. Gina wasn’t the only one in need. Women trapped in the sex trade often have lots of, what I call, parasites feeding off them - people who sit on their backsides doing nothing but using the women as a source of income. Their aim is keep them in the trade and live off them as long as they can. Of course these women can never be free until the parasites are dealt with.

Sadly, even though Putul has been at Freeset for a while, she is yet to be free from prostitution. Although this is hard to understand, her parasites are her mother and brother who pressurize her to stay in the trade.

Talking things through with Putul, we both agreed the best way forward was to find a new room away from her family parasites. Now you can see the dilemma. Who gets the room? Gina or Putul? And who gets to decide?

Knowing that Gina had her mind set on that room I decided to talk with her first. ‘Gina, I know you’d love to move to the bigger room and it would be great for you and your son. The difficulty is that Putul is still selling her body and desperately…” Before I could finish my carefully crafted sentence of explanation Gina interrupted with the biggest of smiles. “Give her the room. I have freedom now. I’m free and she’s not – please give the room. I’d love for her to have the room.”

My Christmas present: To be further down the track in understanding what real freedom is. I guess sometimes we think freedom is the absence of conflict and pain and the ability to have total control over our lives. Gina has neither and yet can stand before God and others and say I’m free. Of course, it helps me understand a little more about this baby born in a stable who didn’t have a room either.

Announcing the STF T-Shirt Design Contest!

Press, Product Information, STF News, Uncategorized — Emily on January 6, 2010 at 2:26 am

It’s 2010 and we’re excited to add T-shirts to our collection of items made by survivors of human trafficking! As you may know, we currently sell awesome jute totes from Freeset in Kolkata, India.  We’ll be adding some great new tote bag designs to our website by the end of January but we are also thrilled that Freeset is now making fair trade, organic cotton t-shirts.  A Freeset tee sustainably pulls people out of poverty, children and pesticides out of fields, and women out of the sex trade - what a deal!

There’s just one catch - we need some designs!  And we’d like the designs to reflect our vision.  At Stop Traffick Fashion we have 3 goals:

  • Support the victims and survivors of human trafficking
  • Support the organizations who are rescuing and providing rehabilitation for victims
  • Raise awareness about human trafficking

Think hope. Think change. Think restoration.  Think about a design that will get people’s attention and allow you to tell them about Stop Traffick Fashion and the 27 million slaves around the world.  You can read more about our vision here.

The design should fit the following specifications:

  • 1-3 colors on front (and back if desired)
  • Black, White, Brown, Blue or Green T-shirt Background (see swatches below)
  • Female or Unisex design
  • PDF and PNG files

color-chart

We’ll be choosing 1-2 designs to be printed and sold on Stop Traffick Fashion.  The winner will receive 1 free T-shirt, a $25 gift certificate for Equal Exchange, plus the knowledge that you’re helping us spread the word about human trafficking and making a difference in the lives of survivors around the world! January is National Human Trafficking Awareness month (more on this later) so what a great way to contribute.

Final Details:

  • Designs are due by February 1, 2010
  • Email your submission to hello@stoptraffickfashion.com
  • Please provide your email address and phone number so we can contact you!

The best gifts always have a story.  Whether it’s where they came from or what they represent, they carry a meaning and a value beyond the gift itself.

Every item at Stop Traffick Fashion has a story.  Our handbags, jewelry, and bath and body products tell the story of the years of hardship, abuse and exploitation that trafficked people around the world face.  More than that, they tell the story of the freedom, healing and restoration that those rescued have experienced.  Everything you buy in our store is made by someone who has survived the unthinkable and is now making slow, steady strides toward confidence, security and joy.  Your purchase directly helps keep over 200 women around the world employed in safe, fair conditions and provides them with a sustainable income and hope for the future.  The women who make our products want to share their story of hope with you, and your purchase empowers them and the organizations that work with them to continue growing and spreading this hope.

You can find out more about their stories on our collections page and through the information on this blog.  You can dig even deeper on our resources page.

This Christmas you can be part of the change and tell a story of hope to your friends and family.  Buy Fashion.  Give Hope.

And, we’ve recently added some new bags to our collection!  They aren’t available on the website but they will be available at all of our trunk shows and upcoming events.  The new bags are from the Nomi Network and are made by survivors in Cambodia.  Nomi Network exists to leverage the marketplace in order to eradicate sex slavery.  We’re very excited to be working with them.  You can watch their video and see that their vision is very closely aligned with ours.  Join us in putting your dollars to work.

Fun & Fresh - Magazine Beads

Product Information, STF News — Emily on October 2, 2009 at 2:59 am

Our full magazine bead collection is now up on the website!  We encourage you to check out these fun bracelets and necklaces made in Uganda from 100% recycled paper.  They are fun and eco-chic.

Uganda has been plagued for over twenty years by internal war between the government and the Lord’s Resistance Army. The war has caused untold numbers of abductions, torture, rape and deaths throughout the northern regions of the country. Many of the women that partner with 31bits were directly affected by the war.  They, or family members, have been abducted from their villages and many suffer from HIV/AIDS due to these atrocities.

Over one-million of the Acholi people have been displaced, many forcibly entered into refugee camps. The camps provide little refuge due to poor security and lack of healthcare, proper sanitation, and jobs. The endemic poverty is hardest on the children who often go hungry and have little opportunity to grow out of their current situation.

However, in the midst of this suffering, there are women who are finding creative ways to provide for themselves and their families through the art of jewelry making. The hand-made jewelry is very difficult to sell in the region due to market availability for such items. Despite the fear of ongoing war and the struggle to provide basic necessities, the women have an immense hope for change.
